Every family group, every meme channel — auto-saved to your camera roll by default. Here’s how to stop the flood and drain the pool.
The quick answer
In WhatsApp > Settings > Chats, turn off Save to Photos. For the one chaotic group, open the chat, tap its name, set Save to Photos > Never. Existing photos stay — clean them once with a swipe pass, then empty Recently Deleted.
Step 1: Turn off auto-save
- Open WhatsApp, tap Settings > Chats.
- Toggle Save to Photos OFF. Future media stays in WhatsApp only.
- Per-chat override: open the group > tap its name > Save to Photos > Never (or Always for the kids-photo group you actually want).
What this gives you: the tap turned off at the source. What this does not give you: back the gigabytes already saved. That’s Step 2.
Step 2: Drain the existing pile
WhatsApp photos hide in your roll by date, not in an album. Fastest path: swipe the weeks the group was hottest, keep the 2-3 keepers, delete the 200 memes. Same triage as screenshots — low sentiment, high volume. Full context in WhatsApp photos filling storage.
The bottom line
One toggle stops the flood; one swipe session drains the pool. Your camera roll goes back to being your photos — not the internet’s.
